Formatting my PC?

I need to format C: to stabilize it. What do I backup to retain what I have? I was thinking of just copying C: over to D: (separate drive) but something tells me that might be a problem. If I move all to seperate drive format then move back will it be intact? Been a while since I did this. Suggestions? Thanks
